National Archive

The Cayman Islands National Archive (CINA) holds the nation’s memory. Just as a family treasures old photographs of important times, people and events, so a nation needs to preserve evidence of its past.

The National Archive was established in 1990 and the duties and responsibilities of CINA are underpinned in The National Archive and Public Records Law (2010 Revision). The National Archive provides three main services: public access to historical holdings, the acquisition and preservation of archival records and the management of government records across the public sector. Additional responsibilities of the National Archive are defined in the Law and the accompanying Regulations. CINA also have responsibilities to establish rules and procedures, as defined in The Financial Regulations section 43(2); The Personnel Regulations section 49(3); and The Freedom of Information Law section 52(3).

Taking a holistic approach to the collection of information and archives, CINA’s holdings have expanded considerably since 1990 to include Oral History interviews, archival holdings, photographs and publications. The Archive’s Historical Collection grows through the appraisal of records from Government agencies, private donations, copies of records identified within the holdings of overseas institutions & an Oral History Programme.

Access to the Historical Collection is readily available through our modern Reading Room service, free of charge. An Archivist will assist you by providing the resources needed to help answer your questions. An appointment is recommended to ensure availability. The Reading Room is open to the public Monday to Friday’s 9am to 4:30pm. To further enhance your research experience, CINA has a large Reference Library making our facility a single place for research, offering both primary and secondary sources for everyone from the genealogist to the academic researcher.
